NJAFP Elects New Officers and Trustees for 2010-2011

The New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians (NJAFP) is pleased to announce the installation of Thomas R. Ortiz, MD, FAAFP (West Orange, N.J.) to the office of President.

Dr. Ortiz is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at NJ Medical School/UMDNJ, and has trained and lectured numerous medical students and residents in the art and practice of Family and Community Medicine and the Principles of Primary Care Medicine. He was also influential in the establishment of a Department of Family Medicine at the NJMS, currently serving as the Chief -Section of Family Medicine at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.  In 1984, he began the private practice of family medicine at The Forest Hill Family Health Associates, PA where he still serves as medical director.  The practice recently received recognition as a Patient Centered Medical Home through the National Council of Quality Assurance (NCQA).  

The New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians represents the more than 1,500 physicians, residents, and medical students in New Jersey who have chosen to specialize in the practice of family medicine.

In addition to Dr. Ortiz, the newly elected officers of the NJAFP include:

  • Vice-President: Salvatore Bernardo, M.D. - Freehold, NJ
  • Treasurer: Thomas Shaffrey, M.D., - Branchburg, NJ
  • Secretary: Krishna Bhaskarabhatla, M.D. - West Patterson, NJ
  • Trustee: Robert Gorman, M.D. - Verona, NJ
  • Trustee: Robin Schroeder, M.D. - Newark, NJ
  • Trustee: Alfred E. Tallia, M.D. - New Brunswick, NJ
  • Trustee: Wen-Shi Chang, M.D. - Freehold, NJ  

The NJAFP is a leader in health care reform, participating on multiple statewide healthcare commissions and task forces. The NJAFP is also leading a major initiative to transform the delivery of primary care in the patient centered medical home (PCMH) model and has assisted over 35 practices in the state and many others across the country in achieving recognition as patient centered medical homes.
